The Coping Behaviors of the People with HIV -Focusing on the Male Homosexuals-

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of the HIV infected male homosexuals and to find out the coping process of them.
Methods: This is a qualitative research using focus group discussion and in-depth individual interview. The focus group involved 13 subjects twice and in-depth individual interview 3 subjects, who were all HIV infected male homosexuals. Data was analyzed by grounded theory methodology. The question was "What¡¯s the life of HIV infected male homosexuals like?".
Results: The coping process HIV infected male homosexuals go through is as follows. The core category of the process is ¡¯To live as a boundary person in dual alienation¡¯ and 8 periods of the process emerge one after another. Double attitude for sexual orientation, recognition of infection, extreme despair with shock, wandering about in giving himself to despair, finding a way to live after wandering, experiencing dual alienation in a homosexual group, feeling difficulties again, and searching for a life of restoration on a boundary line.
Conclusion: The findings of the coping process HIV infected male homosexuals are expected to be useful in the development of nursing strategies and intervention associated with HIV.
